Event Description

Eloquent Statues/Queer Voices is a poetry reading run and hosted by Noah David Roberts (they/them), in seeking to provide a space for queer and innovative poets that is unpretentious, non-competitive, and community oriented. Noah plans to change the landscape of poetry readings in Philadelphia, welcoming established voices, brilliant poets, those who want a community of writers, first-timers, and everyone in between.

Eloquent Statues/Queer Voices will be held at PAT @ Giovanni’s Room. Located on the corner of 12th St and Pine, Giovanni’s Room is the oldest continuously-running LGBTQ & feminist bookstore in the United States now operated by Philadelphia AIDS Thrift, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those living with HIV and AIDS. Donations will be collected in support of their mission, and poets that wish to sell their books via the event should contact the store managers by email: info@queerbooks.com.

The reading is set up as an open mic, giving poets five minutes to share their work. The reading will be live-streamed on the host’s Instagram (@the.apocalypse.poet), and poets who read on September 15th will be presented the opportunity to have their work shared in a zine that the host will put together after the event.

Noah has hosted various readings in the past, including the well-known “Voice Less Readings” in Kingston, NY. They have released three books: “Us V. Them” (2017), “STRIPS” (2018), and “Slime Thing [and other poems]” (2018). They are currently working on a new collection of poetry titled “Final Girl Mythos” (a book of poetry inspired by classic slasher films) for release in October.
